For the sixth year in a row, the Museum's Early Warning Project ran a comparison survey to solicit opinions on countries' relative risks of an onset of mass killing. These are the top 15 countries at risk for mass killing in 2019.
One goal of the Simon-Skjodt Center’s research program is to explore new methodologies to advance the state of the art in atrocity prevention. Towards this end, a recent pilot project analyzed dangerous speech in central Mali, building on the Holocaust Museum’s hate speech work and adding to the Early Warning Project’s broader Mali assessment.
Last month, we shared the results of our Early Warning Project’s latest Statistical Risk Assessment (SRA)—a list of 163 countries ranked by their risk for onset of state-led mass killing. The Early Warning Project has announced a new research fellowship focused on increasing knowledge of early warning for mass atrocities in Mali.
In the early morning of March 6, a masked gunman attacked a crowded nightclub in Bamako, the capital of Mali. In a combination of automatic gunfire and grenade blasts claimed by the northern Mali-based militant group Al Mourabitoun, the gunman killed five people, including four civilians. Beyond Bamako, rebel violence since the conclusion of a French-led military operation against militants in the country’s northern region in early 2013 has periodically targeted civilians throughout Mali.
The civil war in northern Mali is flaring anew, and with it, possibly, the risk of mass atrocities.
