October 1, 2017–March 31, 2018 Jon Temin has worked on Africa, conflict, and governance issues for more than 15 years. From 2014 to 2017, he was a member of the Department of State’s policy planning staff, providing strategic guidance and long-term thinking to the secretary on Africa issues. Jon previously served as director of the US Institute of Peace’s Africa Program, overseeing the Institute’s efforts to help end conflicts and prevent new violence across the continent. His commentary on Africa issues has been featured by, among other outlets, the BBC, New York Times, Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Voice of America, and National Public Radio, and he has testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Jon is a graduate of Swarthmore College and The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, a former Fulbright fellow in Ghana and currently a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Fellowship Project
Jon Temin focused on atrocity issues in Africa and strategies to help international, national, and local actors prevent new violence. Building on his longstanding focus on South Sudan, he conducted research on missed opportunities to prevent violence in South Sudan since the outbreak of civil war in 2013, and sought to understand if options that could have supported better outcomes were available to policymakers.
