Dr. Alexander Kruglov

Professional Background

Dr. Alexander Kruglov is the Scientific Advisor at the Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies (Ukraine), a member of the Scientific Committee of Yahad – in Unum (France), and associate Editor of the “Russian Library of the Holocaust” (Russia).

He received his PhD from Kharkov State University (Ukraine) in 1989. His dissertation is titled "Racism as a Social Phenomenon."  Dr. Kruglov speaks both Russian and Ukrainian fluently and possesses skills in English, Polish, and German. Dr. Kruglov contributed more than 460 entries to the Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos. 1933-1945: Volume II (Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press, 2012) which is a publication of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and more than 200 entries to the Holokost na territorii SSSR. Entsiklopedia (Moskva: ROSSPEN, 2009). While in residence at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Dr. Kruglov conducted research on his project entitled “The Holocaust in the USSR Regions Occupied by Germans: The Problem of Regional Features and Periodization.”

Dr. Kruglov has published 16 monographs  and collections of documents including:  Holokost v Ukraine, 1941-1944. Manuscript (Deposited in 1993 in United States Holocaust Memorial Museum);  Entsiklopedia Holokosta: Evreiskaya Entsiklopedia Ukrainy (Kiev, 2000); Katastrofa ukrainskogo  evreistva. Entsiklopedicheskii spravochnik (Har’kov, 2001); Hronika Holokosta v Ukraine (Dnepropetrovsk; Zaporozh’ye, 2004); The Losses suffered by Ukrainian Jews in 1941-1944 (Kharkov, 2005); Sbornik dokumentov i materialov ob unichtozhenii natsistami evreev Ukrainy v 1941-1944 godah (Kiev,  2002); Bez zhalosti i somneniya. Dokumenty o prestupleniyah operativnyh grupp i komand politsii bezopasnosti i SD na vremenno okkupirovannoi territorii SSSR v 1941-1944 gg., in 4 volumes (Dnepropetrovsk, 2008-2010); Tragediya Bab’yego Yara v nemetskih dokumentah (Dnepropetrovsk, 2011).

Fellowship Research

During his time as J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Senior Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Kruglov intended to use the Museum’s extensive archives to piece together a consistent history of German extermination policies in the Soviet Union. Most public work on the topic to this point has been separated by region (i.e. the Baltics, Ukraine, Crimea etc.) but there has been little done on how Nazi policy changed over time. Dr. Kruglov wished to determine how regional features affected Nazi extermination policy and how the changes in said policy affected each region over time.

Dr. Alexander Kruglov was in residence at the Center from September 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014.
