Dr. Andrii Bolianovskyi

Professional Background

Dr. Andrii Bolianovskyi is currently a Senior Scientific Researcher in History at Ivan Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences in Lviv (Ukraine). Dr. Bolianovskyi studied history at Ivan Franko Lviv National University (Ukraine) where he received his PhD. 

As the Fellow of the Initiative on Ukrainian-Jewish Shared History and the Holocaust in Ukraine, Dr. Bolianovskyi will be conducting research for his project entitled “Ukrainian-Jewish Relations in Context of Shoah in Ukraine from 1941-1944: Main Sources and Questions.”

Dr. Bolianovskyi is a native speaker of Ukrainian and has language skills in Russian, English German and Polish.

Dr. Bolianovskyi is a prolific author who has written multiple monographs and several articles. His most recent book is, Inozemni viiskovi formuvannia v zbroinykh sylakh Nimechchyny (1939–1945) [Foreign Military Formations in the German Armed Forces, 1939-1945] (L’viv, 2013).  His numerous publications include: “Osoblyvosti ukraїns'ko-ievreis'kykh vzaiemyn u zakhidnii Ukraїni u roky natsysts'koї okupatsiї” [Peculiarities of Ukrainian-Jewish relations in western Ukraine during the Nazi occupation] (Dnipropetrovsk, 2013);  ‘Chorna sereda’ sela Kortelisy, 23 veresnia 1942 roku” [Black Wednesday in the village of Kortelisy, 23 September 1942] (L’viv, 2013); “Mizh khrystyians'koiu moralliu i neliuds'kym zlom (reaktsiia Mytropolyta Andreia Sheptyts'koho na okupatsiiny polityku natsional-sotsialistychnoї Nimechchyny v Halychyni y 1941-1944 rr: vid formal'noї loial'nosti do krytyky i protestiv)” [Between Christian Morality and Inhuman Evil. Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi's Response to the Occupation Policies of National Socialist Germany in Galicia, 1941-1944: from Ostensible Loyalty to Criticism and Protests] (Kyiv, 2016).

Along with authors, Jacek Andrzej Młynarczyk, Leonid Rein, and Oleg Romanko, Dr. Bolianovskyi wrote the article“The Special Cases of Eastern Europe: the Polish Blue Police, Auxiliaries, and SS formations” in The Waffen-SS: A European History, co-authored with edited by Jochen Böhler and Robert Gerwarth (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2017).

Fellowship Research

While in residence at the Mandel Center, Dr. Bolianovskyi researched Nazi occupation policy and its impact on Ukrainian-Jewish relations during the war. He used the museums various collections to further this work.

Dr. Bolianovskyi was in residence at the Mandel Center until February 28, 2016.
