Professional Background

Mackenzie Jones received her master's degree in Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European studies from Columbia University and her bachelor's degree in international relations, with minors in German and arts, from Louisiana State University.

While completing her graduate studies, Ms. Jones received a PepsiCo Junior Fellowship for her research on the relationship between Soviet state consolidation and the pogroms of 1918-1920. Her academic interests include nationalism and antisemitism in the western borderlands of the Soviet Union.

Fellowship Research

While at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as a Summer Graduate Student Research Fellow, Mackenzie Jones will conduct research on the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. Her work explores how the Soviet Union’s peculiar categorization of nations and its model of historicizing conflict resulted in an interpretive framework that de-ethnicized the Holocaust. Her research will utilize archival documents regarding crimes committed in Soviet-occupied territories to explore how local and regional administrative bodies used Soviet political frames to explain interethnic tensions.

Residency Period: June 1, 2025–August 31, 2025
