New York Next Generation 30th Anniversary Event

Benefit Event

Thirty years ago, thanks to the bold vision of survivors and an unprecedented public-private partnership with the American people, the Museum opened. Together, we have accomplished so much—but we can’t be complacent. Just as we are losing the eyewitnesses, antisemitism is rising and conspiracy theories and misuse of the Holocaust are taking hold. We must respond by ensuring the truth and relevance of the Holocaust for new generations—far beyond our walls.

Join us on May 16th to hear about the impact of individual choices during the Holocaust. While many were complicit, others did not give in to opportunities to betray their fellow human beings, reminding us there is an alternative to complicity in evil acts.

The program will focus on two remarkable, true stories of ordinary people during the Holocaust. Susanna Fogel and Bel Powley, director and star, respectively, of National Geographic's new limited series A Small Light will speak in a conversation with Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman.

A Small Light explores the story of Miep Gies (Powley), who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and saved her diary for the world. Like Anne, Ullman and his parents were forced into hiding in Amsterdam. The Ullmans, however, survived—thanks to the bravery of two families who risked their lives to protect them. Ullman came to know Miep Gies after liberation through their shared efforts to tell the story of the Holocaust.
