The School Pictures

Artifacts Unpacked Video Series

What do a girl’s school pictures say about perseverance?

When it was time to go back to school for second grade, six-year-old Yoka Verdoner found out her life was going to change. In 1941, in German-occupied Netherlands, the Nazis excluded Jewish children from public schools.

The following year, life for Yoka and her family changed even more drastically when, to avoid deportation, the children had to separate from their parents and each other to live in hiding with guardians.
