The Children’s Artwork

Artifacts Unpacked Video Series

How did a teacher preserve the memory and spirit of a group of children?

Knowing she was in danger of being deported by the Nazis, Gertrude Winter—a teacher in Vienna, Austria—collected hundreds of her young students' drawings, photographs, and letters to try to keep them safe.

About the Artifacts

The acquisition of the collection in the video was made possible by Herta Griffel Baitch, Amy and Andrew Cohn, William J. and Sybil K. Klein, and Dee Dee and Eliot Simon. Explore the Gertrude Winter Collection.
