Road Closures and Restricted Pedestrian Access

Due to the U.S. Army 250th Birthday Celebration on Saturday, June 14, 2025, there are significant road closures and pedestrian access restrictions in Washington, D.C. View directions for accessing the Museum.

Hours, Location, and Transportation

The Museum is free and open every day. It is closed on Yom Kippur and Christmas Day.

  • The Museum building is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • All exhibitions and the Museum shop close at 5:20 p.m.

  • The last entry into the Permanent Exhibition is at 4:30 p.m.

June 14 Road Closures

If you are planning to visit on Saturday, June 14, there will be a significant number of road closures and pedestrian access restrictions in Washington, DC, due to the U.S. Army 250th Birthday Celebration. Directions for accessing the Museum are provided below. Please be advised that this information is subject to change.

To reach the Museum (located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW, Washington, DC 20024), we strongly recommend that Museum visitors use Metro. Walking directions follow below.

From the Smithsonian 12th Street/Independence Avenue Station Exit (approximately 20 minutes)

  • Exit the station and head east (right) on Independence Avenue to 12th Street (first corner)

  • Walk south (right) on 12th Street, SW to Maine Avenue, SW

  • Bear right on Maine Avenue and pass under the pedestrian and railroad bridges

  • Cross the road and follow the sign to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, and continue west under the overpass

  • Cross the access road to southbound Interstate 395 and continue along Maine Avenue

  • Veer right onto Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW

  • Head north along the east sidewalk of Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW to the Museum

From L’Enfant Plaza Metro station (approximately 25 minutes)

  • Exit Metro through Exit C (9th & D Street, SW)

  • Take the escalator up and make a right to exit the mall/food court. Proceed to D Street, SW

  • On D Street, SW turn left and proceed west until you reach 12th Street, SW

  • Cross 12th Street, SW and head south (left) on 12th Street, SW to Maine Avenue, SW

  • Bear right on Maine Avenue and pass under the pedestrian and railroad bridges

  • Cross the road and follow the sign to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, and continue west under the overpass

  • Cross the access road to southbound Interstate 395 and continue along Maine Avenue

  • Veer right onto Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW

  • Head north along the east sidewalk of Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW to the Museum

The Museum is located on the National Mall, just south of Independence Avenue, SW, between 14th Street and Raoul Wallenberg Place in Washington, DC.

How to Get Here

Metro

The nearest Metro stop is Smithsonian on the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines, located one block east of the Museum. For more information on Metro and bus routes, visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s website.

Parking

The Museum does not have a public parking facility, but there is a paid parking garage located across the street, on D Street, SW, between 13th and 14th Streets, and some metered parking along Independence Avenue. For more information, access the USHMM Parking Map.

The National Park Service has designated approximately ten handicap-accessible parking spaces at and around the Washington Monument, along Independence Avenue west of 14th Street, and at the Tidal Basin parking lot for vehicles with appropriate tags.
