As the horrific war in Ukraine continues, we at the Museum are appalled by the destruction of lives and cities. We stand with the Ukrainian people and are particularly concerned about the several thousand Holocaust survivors there, as well as many colleagues and partners. Please join us for a meaningful conversation on the matter.

  • Museum Condemns Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

    The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum strongly condemns Russia’s outrageous attack on Ukraine and is deeply concerned about threats to civilians and loss of life. In justifying this attack, Vladimir Putin has misrepresented and misappropriated Holocaust history by claiming falsely that democratic Ukraine needs to be “denazified.” Equally groundless and egregious are his claims that Ukrainian authorities are committing “genocide” as a justification for the invasion of Ukraine.

  • The Holocaust in Ukraine

    On the eve of the invasion in 1941, Ukraine was home to the largest Jewish population in Europe. The fate of those Jews depended on many factors, including the local occupying authority and whether they were among the very few evacuated to the interior of the Soviet Union ahead of the invading forces. While scholars are still researching the scale of the Holocaust in Ukraine, they estimate at least one and a half million Jews were killed there. The Museum is in the process of gathering written records and oral testimony to fully tell the story of what happened in Ukraine during the Holocaust.
