LocationFORT SILL, OKMessageThis web site has been very helpful in the planning of our "Days of Remembrance" week at the end of April. Here are some of the ideas we have come up with for our TRADOC base:1. In our main PX area we have reserved an empty gift shop area to establish a Holocaust Museum for the entire week, so that family members and Soldiers can view many of the exhibits, posters, and videos we will have on display for the week. 2. We also are having a main luncheon with guest Speaker Mr. Martin Weiss (Holocaust survivor). At this event we will also have ID cards to give to each table and recognize 6 high school students from our local area who won our month long essay contest on this year's theme related the Nuremberg Trials. |

LocationWashington, DC, USAMessageDear Lt Taylor,Thank you for sharing details about your planned observance of Days of Remembrance. Concerning your request to contact the USHMM, we would like to utilize this discussion forum for sharing ideas, asking questions, and receiving feedback in the hopes that the public format can be beneficial to many seeking resources. Addressing your question, the Museum’s website has materials that would be useful for dissemination in conjunction with an educational program. Among them are: 1) ID cards, portraying the experience of individuals living in Europe during the Holocaust, are available online and can be downloaded at: http://www.ushmm.org/education/foreducators/resource/idcards.pdf 2) The Museum's Holocaust Encyclopedia provides many articles, which can be printed and distributed, organized by topic. The Introduction to the Holocaust provides a good overview: http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/ 3) The Museum's Committee on Conscience, dedicated to alerting the public conscience to ongoing threats of genocide and crimes against humanity in today's world, offers 2 short films that might be of interest: "A Good Man in Hell" features General Romeo Dallaire as he reflects on his role as head of the U.N. Peacekeeping Force during the Rwanda genocide in 1994. "Witnessing Darfur" explores the current genocide emergency in the Darfur region of the Sudan through the eyes of former Marine Captain Brian Steidle, who was a member of the African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur, witnessing hundreds of atrocities. To order a copy of these videos, please email genocideprevention@ushmm.org and provide your name and mailing address. Thank you for your commitment to observing Days of Remembrance. |

LocationUSS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74), Bremerton, WAMessageMrs. Wasserman,Is there a phone number at which military Days of Remembrance military coordinators could contact USHMM for advice and resources for observances? I would like to order some pamphlets and victim ID cards for dissemination during our education outreach, but have not been able to find a good number. As for our observance, we are planning on placing an information table on the mess decks, placing educational items in the Plan of the Day, and showing Holocaust and genocide themed movies on one of the ship's TV channels. Very Respectfully, Joshua P. Taylor LT USN CVN-74 Days of Remembrance Coordinator |

LocationVandenberg Air Force Base, CaliforniaMessageI'm really excited about this year's event that we have planned. For all military installations: The museum is great with helping with anything. I was able to obtain personal identification cards on holocaust victims to have for individuals attending our luncheon. Our planned events are as follows: Monday: Screening of "Never Forget" with Leonard Nimoy and Blythe Danner. It's about Mr. Mel Mermelstein's fight with the International Historical Review to prove Jews were gassed at Auschwitz. Mr. Mermelstein will be available for questions and answers afterwards. Tuesday: Luncheon with Mr. Mel Mermelstein as our guest speaker. We are passing out identification cards for each place setting. Thursday: Screening of "In the Arms of Strangers" about the transportation of children to Britian to be placed in foster care at the onset of the Holocaust. Friday: Chapel's monthly Prayer Breakfast with guest speaker: Mrs. Marion Wolff. She is one of the children who were sent off to Britian. We have displays going up with articles from Mr. Mermelstein's museum. He has been so kind to loan us some things. If you have any questions or would like to know more about what we are doing, please contact me at DSN: 275-8126 (Commercial: (805) 605-8126). |
