[Denied applications for exemption from deportation] (ID: 35645)

Description:
This grouping is comprised of applications for exemption from deportation from the Łódź Ghetto that were denied. The applications include letters from individuals to der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt Ausweisungs Kommission (The Eldest of the Jews in Łódź, Deportation Commission). These individuals (and their families in many cases) had received an Ausreise-Aufforderung form which told them who was supposed to report for deportation and when. The letters would include the names of those considered for deportation and then reasons why they should not be deported. These reasons include illness of self or family member, belief that their work made them an integral part of the Ghetto, and belief that there was some mistake and they should not be deported. The applications also include supporting documents such as: certificates from an individual’s place of work which included name, address, occupation, and review of their work; medical forms; doctor’s notes; workers cards; marriage certificates; and passports. Most of the documents include a stamp or a handwritten note somewhere reading “ODMOWA” (DENIED).
