Abstract:
Contains two alphabetical name registers of Jewish refugees who survived the Holocaust as refugees in the former British Nyasaland Protectorate (current-day Malawi):
-- "Appendix I: List of Evacuees from Cyprus as reported by the Jewish Agency in the report of 23 June 1941" (441 names in 438 cumulatively-numbered entries), p. 52-62.
-- "Appendix II: List of Evacuees from Cyprus in Nankumba Camp, Nyasaland 5 January 1942 : Table 5: Evacuees in Nankumba Camp, Nyasaland" (96 names), p. 66-67.

"The rise of the Nazis in Germany in the 1930s saw thousands of Jews attempting to find safe havens in other European countries, Palestine, China, Australia, England and the Americas. Those who found refuge in other European countries for the most part found themselves again under threat as the Third Reich expanded over Western Europe and then eastwards. Several hundred Jews found their way to Cyprus, which was under British rule at that time. However, in June 1941, Cyprus was also under threat of German invasion, and in a strange twist of fate, the British decided to evacuate all non-Cypriot civilians from the island, including 442 Jewish civilians who were evacuated to Palestine. Considering the limitations instigated under the notorious White Paper of 1939 which severely restricted the numbers of Jews who could immigrate to Palestine, the evacuation seemed in direct conflict with British policy. Of the Jewish evacuees, 270 were subsequently shipped to British protectorates in East Africa—Nyasaland and Tanganyika—where they remained throughout the war. This paper follows the paths of those Jews evacuated to Nyasaland [current-day Malawi]."--P. [i].
