Abstract:
Includes a list of 350 American soldiers (most captured during the 1944 Battle of the Bulge) held in the Berga am Elster concentration camp, a subcamp of Buchenwald, which also had the code name "Schwalbe V." Many of those listed perished from malnutrition, disease and maltreatment. These American prisoners of war were mostly Jews or "suspected Jews," persons that the Germans had decided appeared to be Jewish, who had been specially singled out and taken from other prisoner of war camps, such as Stalag IX-B located at Bad Orb.
