Provenance:
- This list was provided to Aufbau for publication by the JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency).
- From September 1, 1944 through September 27, 1946, the German-language newspaper Aufbau, published in New York City, printed numerous lists of Jewish Holocaust survivors, as well as a few lists of victims. These lists, which include 33,557 names in total, were computerized and proofread by staff and volunteers of the Survivors Registry of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. from 1997 to 1999. A searchable database of these names can be found online at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/holocaust/aufbau.htm. Data compiled from this source is also included in the "USHMM namesearch" online system (Staff Version: http://staff.ushmm.org/namesearch/; Public Version: http://www.ushmm.org/namesearch/) as the data set titled: "Aufbau: A list of the locations of Holocaust survivors and victims from the Aufbau German language publications of the 1940s."

Abstract:
Alphabetical listing of German and Austrian Jews said to have been liberated by American troops from a labor camp at Altenberg in Saxony [i.e. actually located in Thuringia] then living in a nearby former Hitler Youth base in Waldenberg, Germany as of Summer 1945 who were seeking relatives abroad. Altenberg was the site of several HASAG slave labor factories run as subcamps of Buchenwald. Entries include name and in many cases age and/or place of prior residence or birth and the names and possible locations of those, typically family members, being sought. Please note that this list is not a complete listing of all those liberated at Altenberg and residing in Waldenberg, but only the names of Geman and Austrian Jews. The original list as received is said to contain approx. 700 names of Hungarian Jews as well and could be viewed in the Aufbau offices in New York. The article explains that the entire list could not be printed due to space and paper shortages.
