Provenance:
From September 1, 1944 through September 27, 1946, the German-language newspaper Aufbau, published in New York City, printed numerous lists of Jewish Holocaust survivors, as well as a few lists of victims. These lists, which include 33,557 names in total, were computerized and proofread by staff and volunteers of the Survivors Registry of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. from 1997 to 1999. A searchable database of these names can be found online at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/holocaust/aufbau.htm. Data compiled from this source is also included in the "USHMM namesearch" online system (Staff Version: http://staff.ushmm.org/namesearch/; Public Version: http://www.ushmm.org/namesearch/) as the data set titled: "Aufbau: A list of the locations of Holocaust survivors and victims from the Aufbau German language publications of the 1940s."

Abstract:
Alphabetical name register of liberated Jews who were supposed to have been transported on January 20, 1945 from Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany to the UNRRA-camp Philippeville in Algeria (via Switzerland), but who had to leave the train for 'uncontrollable' reasons in Biberach or Ravensburg. At the time the list was prepared, these individuals were in the camp of Wurzach in Allgäu. Entries include name, maiden name, age, family members and place of origin.
