Provenance:
This manuscript was found in 1989 in eastern Slovakia (Presov?) in an old building of the Slovakian Jewish community. It was in a pile of books, prayer shawls and tefillin (phylactories). Jewish Holocaust survivors, returning to Eastern Slovakia after the war, gathered together and aided each other to adjust to post-Holocaust Europe. They compiled these detailed records about some 700 Jewish Slovakians who had survived the Holocaust and previously lived in Kivjast, Presov, Jelsava, Kosice, Uzhorod and other towns. Historicana in Burlingame, Calif. was selling this manuscript for $4,000 in 1994. According to Dr. Alice Ginott, a survivor from Presov who lives in New York, it was purchased by the Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance Archives in Los Angeles, which has since computerized the information. Dr. Ginott plans to share a copy of the database with the USHMM pending the approval of the Simon Wiesenthal Center (4/96).
