Meijer de Groot (1897-1944) and his wife Sophia Swaab de Groot (1900-1944) owned a hardware and electrical appliance store on Rijnstraat in the city of Arnhem, The Netherlands. After being warned of a forthcoming round-up of Jews, the de Groot family left their home in Arnhem to go into hiding in November 1942. Louis (b. 1929) and his sister, Rachel (1927-1944), hid in several dozen places throughout the Netherlands. Rachel eventually joined her parents at their hiding place in Amsterdam, while Louis made it to the home of Dirk and Ann Onderweegs in Lemmer in January 1944. Rachel and her parents were denounced on April 8, 1944, arrested by a Dutch policeman who was a childhood friend of Meijer's, and sent first to Westerbork and then to Auschwitz where they perished. Louis stayed with the Onderweegs until August 1946 when he entered the Jewish Boys Orphanage in Amsterdam. He fought for Israel in 1948, briefly returned to Holland, and emigrated to the United States in 1950, where he married and had two sons.

- Louis de Groot donated one reel of 8mm color and black and white film shot by his father Meijer de Groot to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in May 2009. During the war, the family films were stored in the De Booys photo studio safe in Arnhem, the Netherlands, which was blasted for valuables by German troops in 1944. As a result, only fragments of the home movies were salvaged from the ruins; the pieces were spliced together randomly and retrieved by Louis after the war. He also donated to the Museum family photographs, letters from his sister Rachel, documents from the Red Cross about the fate of the de Groot family, and Rachel's homework notebook.

Mother Sophia de Groot's sister Esther, her husband Max van der Stam, and their son Freddy visited Arnhem probably in 1937. Family visits Sonsbeek Park and the bridge across the Rhine in prewar Arnhem

Rachel and Louis play leapfrog on the sidewalk as other de Groot family members walk towards the camera behind them. Louis sweeps a sidewalk alley adjacent to his house with a push broom. Rachel and friend Nel de Booys, the daughter of the camera shop owner who kept these films for safekeeping during the war, carry one another in the alley as Louis sweeps (slowed down). They smack at each other playfully. They then carry Louis in front of the de Groot store on Rijnstraat. An older man and trusted employee of the de Groot family store, Herman Langenbach, carries Louis on his shoulders, flanked by the rest of the children. Louis and Rachel spent their first night in hiding at the home of Mr. Langenbach. Another shot of children walking towards the camera in the alley, including children of the caretakers of People's University near the end of the alley. Rachel and cousin Henny Cohen spent the summer of 1941 at the farm of Steef and Bertha van der Pol in Zwartebroek when vacation opportunities for Jews were severely limited. Bertha had been the children's nanny before 1936/7. Louis and his parents visited Rachel one day, along with cousin Florence de Groot, who spent her summer vacation with the de Groots in Arnhem while her father was in jail. The children, older now, play at a farm outdoors. Louis pulls Florence in a wagon, with a string attached to the wagon and to his belt, he plays the horse. The de Groot family is walking about, in clogs. Pigs and cattle are walking about. Good MS, Rachel and Henny pose for the camera while trying to stand up straw. The others, including Louis with glasses and the farmer's son William, wave to the camera while in the straw. A woman, Bertha?, milks a cow with no bucket. A man, Steef?, brings two buckets on a board on his shoulders. Rachel milks the cow. Henny milks the cow. Louis milks the cow. They carry the buckets back, with some of the children trying to do it. Then everyone skips towards the camera. Cousin Florence sits on a rock, chickens in the BG, and pretends to smoke a cigarette. Louis pulls more children around in the wagon once more. Children chasing after calves. They feed the cattle, and Florence attempts to lead a cow by a string attached to the cow's horns. The children, then Louis, pretend to milk the cow.
Ice-skating in prewar Netherlands

The de Groot family ice-skates on a large pond (either Winter 1939-1940 or 1940-1941) in Sonsbeek Park. Rachel is with her classmates, while Louis attempts skating for the first time. There are hundreds skating in the BG as the children struggle to skate with blades strapped to their boots. They drink cocoa or hot anis milk delivered on a sled. They resume skating towards the camera, some doing better than others.

Rachel de Groot's performance for a swimming diploma

In order to earn a swimming diploma, children were required to swim in clothes other than a bathing suit. This practice became a performance followed by the participants swimming in their fancy outfits. Meijer de Groot filmed his daughter Rachel dressed as Red Riding Hood, and her friend Nel de Booys, the daughter of the camera shop owner, among other candidates. INTs, actors in costume in a dark setting. They sample cake of some sort held by someone dressed as a nurse. A young girl in a dress acting, shakes hands with another young girl. A group dressed identically in flowing dresses and bonnets dance about.
Visiting the park and the zoo in prewar Netherlands

De Groot family visits Sonsbeek Park in spring 1939

A dog, then large groups of well dressed people walking in Sonsbeek Park on a pathway next to massive flowerbeds of various colors. This was the first time that flower bulbs were planted in Sonsbeek, which merited the purchase of color film by Meijer de Groot. This was the only color film he made. Sophia de Groot walks the dog, another dog runs up to join it. Meijer then walks the same dog. The dog runs off, and Louis, his sister Rachel, mother Sophia, and Eva Haller (a Kindertransport girl from Vienna who stayed with the de Groots) walk towards the camera. Two dogs begin to play in front of them. 01:01:44 LS, the famous and very popular waterfall in Sonsbeek Park. MS, pond and the reflection of the trees in it. A swan swims through the middle. Louis with the family dog on a rock overlooking the pond, where there was a footbridge.

Parade in the city of Arnhem, filmed from the front of the de Groot family-owned hardware and electrical appliance shop on Rijnstraat. Merchant-owned horse-drawn carriages and automobiles adorned in flowers and filled with people drive past a large crowd on the street for the annual flower corso. People on bicycles, then young men and women in blazers on a sports team walk by following a float with an outline of a discus thrower on it. 01:02:32 CU, float with a sign, partially deciphered as "van Zoon Boerden Brood... de Groot..." More cars, a bus, and policemen on horseback drive by.

Cut to various family members in suits, along with Louis and Rachel, walking towards the camera on Rijnstraat, then in the alley, on the occasion of a visit by Meijer de Groot's brothers, Salomon, Izak, Mozes, and his sister, Julia van Leeuwen, and their children, Florence and Louis de Groot, Henny Cohen, and Elly van Leeuwen.
