I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Officer Johns. I have to say that I wish he was still with us, but I do sleep better at night knowing that there are people like him in the world; people who are willing to give their lives for complete strangers. I hope that his family, both within the Museum and within his private life, find some comfort in knowing that there are people who never met him who admire him greatly. I am one of those people.

I have visited the Museum many times in the past, and will continue to do so; I, like many others, feel that the Museum's mission is very important. I am relieved, too, that the act of one crazed lunatic will not cause others to stop visiting the Museum. Remember- "For the Dead and the Living, We Must Bear Witness". Unfortunately, the number of the dead honored in the Museum includes many brave people who refused to let a tyrant dictate to them, and we now have to place Officer Johns among their number. I hope he, like those other brave people, is never forgotten.

I was shocked to hear of Officer Johns' death in the line of duty caused by the actions of a wretched human being.

I did not know Officer Johns but his heroism deeply affected me. A contribution has been made. I'm just sorry that it had to be a modest one because of personal circumstances.

I am so sorry about the loss of Officer Johns, a true hero. I am sad for the family to have to deal with a senseless tragedy. There are countless people thinking of you and what you are all going through. Hate and intolerance cannot succeed. The museum stands for so many things, hope, humanity, understanding, not the least of what it represents. Officer Johns exemplifies this.

When I first heard of Officer Johns outstanding heroism, I immediately contacted all of my family and friends to join me in contributing to the Memorial Fund in his name for his family, but more importantly to let his family know that hate cannot prevail in this world, that only through love and respect of one another and each of our differences will we ever be at peace.

In many countries today the man who shot Stephen Johns would have immediately been executed, but in this country we rushed in to save him to insure that even though there were many people who saw him in the act of this horrific crime, we as a Nation will insure him his civil rights in our courts. I wanted him to die, I truly did for what he did to this wonderful man and his surviving family. Even this perpetrator's son wished that he had died, but we, thank God, are a just country. Remember this in the days ahead and remember to always act out of kindness , justice and love. Hate breeds nothing but more of the same.

May God Bless you Stephen Johns and your family.

In deepest sorrow and respect,
L Hammer

Our heart goes out to Officer Johns' family.

We've been donating to the museum for years and only visited it for the first time a year ago. It was one of the highlights of our trip to DC. Then to learn that an officer, who happens to be Black, was killed by a White supremacist there just saddens us even now, months later. Such a dreadful tragedy; we hope some good will come of this.
