As I was walking into the door, I not only was moved by the thought of what I was going to see and hear and experience but also the thought of this fine man who was protecting our rights to see this. May God bless his family and may we never forget him. |
Name: Lynne Barol June 27, 2009 05:05 PM | Location: Penn Valley, PA Message: This is such a tragedy. My heart goes out to the family of Stephen Johns and my prayers are with them. It is hard to believe that at a Holocaust Memorial a hate crime can occur. |

Officer Johns went to work and ended up making the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.

Name: Lucy Smith June 27, 2009 02:49 PM | Location: Minnesota Message: I wrote a personal message to the young son of Officer Stephen T. Johns and his mother in the name of a group of people representing diverse religions and races but working together against racism, antisemitism and all other hates.
What we would like to suggest is a very public invitation to various groups with similar values, to band together in a very public and very loud protest against those who murder because of their blind hate.
I also would like all of them to unite in expression of love and care for the bereaved family of Stephen T. Johns and all other families of recent victims of hate, regardless whether their believes and activities were shared by some groups, as long as they were decent and acting by love and not by hate.
We have to be so loud and numerous in publicly protesting against any murderous hate that our voices will overpower the sound of gun shots and will be heard by our media and replicated by them many times over as a power of decency over evil. |
Name: Charlotte S June 27, 2009 02:33 PM | Location: Connecticut Message: My deepest condolences to Mr. Johns' family, friends and colleagues, especially to his mother, who showed such humanity, faith and courage in dealing with this tragedy. |
Name: Lori June 26, 2009 10:22 PM | Location: New York City Message: To the family of Officer Johns, We are so sorry to hear of your terrible loss. I hope the following poem provides you with some comfort. My late-sister, who also died in her 30s, wrote it.
"I Can’t Help Missing You So Much" written by Gail Mutterperl
Missing you is something I feel every moment. It’s like a little piece of sadness That I carry around with me. When I stop what I am doing To take a moment to think of you, There is an emptiness That fills me up inside. But along with the sadness There are wonderful memories. And when I think of all the Special times we had, I can’t help but smile In spite of the sadness. It is then that I realize That I would rather Feel the pain of missing you Than lose a single memory Of you and me together. |

Name: Eddie Abramovich June 26, 2009 01:17 PM | Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina Message: So far in distance and so near in feelings from that tragic scenario. Feelings in which sorrow for the brave and young life lost melts with anger against criminal hatred and intolerance.
My warmest hug to the Stephen Tyrone Johns' family. |
