User Comment:
Searching the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants Database I inputted "Gerszon Doremfus" and found a "Gerszon Dorembus" with a birth year of 1932 which matches the year of someone from school #20A (1928-1933). His birth date was listed as 7 Aug 1932 with an occupation of Schueler which means student so it also is congruent with this person. He has two ghetto addresses listed, one is Halbe 8 and the other Moltke 58. There was not an option of Halbe but there was a Halbe Gasse which may be the same street. There was no Moltke in the drop-down list.

Great work! I agree this is the person who signed this name in the album. I look forward to seeing what you've uncovered in the next stages.

I agree you've found the student who signed this name in the album. In the future, please use the "research notes" field to explain to me and your fellow researchers how you arrived at your conclusions. Also, keep an eye on the March 1942 date in his notes field in the next stages.

I agree. Can you use the secondary source materials to determine where this transport may have gone?
User Comment:
Searching the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants Database I found in the notes AUSG 20.3.42 which is a deportation date, to Chelmno. There is also a transfer number of 34/2. Looking through the advanced search I used the Fuzzy and DM soundex options to get a wider range of entries but using both "Gerszon Dorembus" and "G Dorembus" did not provide any other entries. Looking through the Labor Cards there was a "Brandla Dorembus" born 18.1.1923 but there were no similar names to Gerszon Dorembus. In the Secondary Source I searched for the deportation dates of 20.03.1942 and found that "Between January and May 1942, more than 54,000 Lodz Jews were killed at Chelmno." This could have been his fate but there is not enough information to be positive. The transports to Auschwitz were later that same year between May and July. Searching through the Auschwitz Prisoner List there were no last names matching Dorembus or names matching Gerszon Dorembus. Using the Advanced Search and only inserting Dorembus with the DM Soundex and Fuzzy option I found only three entries two from the same person, Maria Dorembus and a Tauba but there were no Gerszons. Even entering his book listed name, Doremfus, did not attain a different match than was already found. Looking through the Catalogue of Oral History Arhives there were no matches for a Dorembus as an author and the closest name was "Dorfman." With an Advanced Google search there were many results but none that had both the first and last name together and was not from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. There was also no new information using the Postwar Lists of Survivors. With ancestry.com there were two results when inputting Gerszon Dorembus but neither were the correct person. The birth year narrowed the search but then provided me with no results.

In March 1942, there were daily deportations to Chelmno. You may list Chelmno as his "camp deported to" and "place of death," listing the secondary sources as your source for both.

Did Maria or Tauba live at the same address as Gerszon? If so, they might be family members, and you can list them on this stage.
