User Comment:

On Chaja Kac's record, it states ABG 10.7.44 A.G. This could either mean that she changed addresses on July 10, 1944 and then may have deported to Chelmno. Or, She could have been deported to Chelmno on July 10, 1944 and perished in the gas vans--there is a record of this move in the secondary sources record.

My main concern here is what do the abbreviation ABG + Date mean and what does AG mean? Also, Professor Gamber said AG may stand for Abgang or Ausgang--what do those terms indicate?

How We Confirmed this was Chaja Kac:

When I typed in her name, several matches came up. I looked for the date range she would have fallen into and found a girl named Chaja Sura Kac, who was born within the same time frame as the girl who has signed the book. Furthermore, the ghetto address for Chaja Sura Kac matched the school address where Chaja Kac went as well. In addition to the date and the address, the occupation of Chaja Sura Kac was student, as was the occupation of the Chaja Kac who signed the book.

Therefore, I deduced that this was the Chaja Kac who signed the book, except her full name is Chaja Sura Kac.

I like your thought process!

While I agree that you found one plausible match for the Chaja Kac who signed the schools album, there are numerous possible matches (I found no fewer than 4 Chaja Kacs and one Chaja Katz born in Lodz between 1927-1932). Any one of them could have signed the album. And while I find it intriguing that your Chaja lived on the same street as school #7B, Zgierska/Hohensteinerstrasse was a major thoroughfare (see http://www.lodz-ghetto.com/zgierska_street.html,5). So, an address on that street is not conclusive evidence in this case.

FYI - "ausgang" and "abgang" literally mean "sent out" or "departure." Given the date associated with this particular record for Chaja Kac, you are correct that it is likely that she was deported to Chelmno.

Given the numerous possible matches for the student who signed the album, I will have to mark this submission as "possible" until we can find a greater convergence of evidence suggesting a single candidate.

Keep up the research.
