Gymnasium and high school for girls
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for girls was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

User Comment:
I began my research by looking for children in the Inhabitants Database with the option to "search names that sound familiar" as well. I began looking for children who would fit into a certain period of time for them to be able to be students (1922 - 1928 approximately). WHen I typed in S. Toronczyk four names that fit that period of time appeared. Two of them were boys so I ruled them out automatically. One of the two girls was Syma Toronczyk who would've fit the description if it wasn't for her occupation status: "haustotcher" which translated into "Lady's help" in English. I ruled her out and hence was left with Szajndla Toronczyk who would've been 14 years old on 1941 and therefore could have been a student at Gymnasium. Her last name fit perfectly into the description given in the Stuend'ts List and her occupation as a "Schuelerein" made me believe that S. Toronczyk could in fact be Szanjdla.

You appear to have found the person who signed the album. Of all the "S. Toronczyk"s in the database, only Szajndla is of an appropriate age to have been in Gymnasium in 1941 (14 years old) and is female. I'm interested to see what else you can learn about her!
Thank you for your comment--it's quite thorough, and I agree completely with your process. I look forward to seeing what else you've discovered about her!
Also note that Szajndla lived at Kelmstrasse 15, apartment 5.
I'm going to mark your research as "Possible," in the event that we find another female S. Toronczyk born in a similar period in a database available in a later stage, but I hope to be able to mark it confirmed soon!

Thanks for inputting the transport number; I agree that this is the same person you found in Stage 1 and that she left the ghetto on transport #13. I do want to see more information, though, before we say for certain that she wound up in Chelmno--the fact that we have a transport number makes it likely that Chelmno was her final destination, but since we've been finding students who were transported to camps other than Chelmno, I'm going to mark this as "possible" until we know more. Let me know what else you find out!
