Gymnasium and high school for boys
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for boys was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

User Comment:
I searched the database under the exact setting for the last name of "Engelki" and it returned no matches. When I searched the database under the fuzzy setting, I was able to find 2 possible matches for the student that may have signed the album. The first was Menachem Dawid Engulka. His date of birth was June 15, 1925, and he resided at the Hamburgerstrasse and Adolf-Hitler-Strasse residences. His occupation was listed as that of a Schueler, and he had a deportation date of March 20, 1942 listed in his further notes. The second was Menachem Dawid Engelke. He was born March 24, 1925, and he resided at both Sulzfelderstrasse residences. He was listed as a buroangst (office worker) in his occupation notes. In his further notes, it indicates that he perished on October 8, 1942.

Thank you for adding information from both records--despite the similar names, these are clearly different people, since we have two different dates of death.

User Comment:
I searched the database for the exact name of "Engulka" and then checked addresses to see if I could find any individuals that shared the same address as Menachem. Gabriel (born 1895) was the oldest male listed at the residence, and I believe that he was Menachem's father. Frajda (born March 10, 1897) was the only female listed at the residence, and I believe that she was Menachem's mother. Ber (born July 20, 1933) was the only other child listed at the residence, and I believe that he was Menachem's brother. I went and did a quick search at jewishgen.org's Holocaust database (I checked the Lodz Ghetto List under the exact spelling of the name of Engulka) and was able to find that Gabriel, Menachem, and Ber were all transported on March 20, 1942 on transport 25. This transport was bound for Chelmno, where they likely perished in gas vans. Frajda perished on June 4, 1941 within the Lodz Ghetto. I was unable to find a cause of death. For the Engelke family, I used the same method as I had used for the Engulka family (searching for exact last name and matching address). Jakob Lajb (born January 3, 1884) was the oldest male listed at the residence, and I believe that he was Menachem's father. Dobrusia (born 1883) was the oldest female listed at the addresses, and I believe that she was Menachem's mother. Ita (born 1910) and Hersz (born August 25,1919) were the other children listed at the residence, and I believe that they were Menachem's older siblings. According to jewishgen.org's Holocaust database, Menachem perished within the ghetto on October 8, 1942. Jakob perished within the Ghetto on March 9, 1942. Dobrusia perished within the Ghetto on April 24, 1942. I was unable to find causes of death for them. I was also unable to find any further information as to what happened to Hersz and Ita.
