Gymnasium and high school for girls
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for girls was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

In an exact search for M* Berkan, 9 results came up. Malka was the only female, and her birthdate put her in the right age range to attend the Gymnasium and high school for girls.

I agree that this is the most likely candidate to have signed this name in the album. Good job!

User Comment:
Malka lived at two different addresses, and I found family members who lived at at least one of the exact same addresses, including her father (Szymon, b. 1987), her mother (Chana, b. 1902), and siblings Estera (b. 1924) and Mojsze (b. 1933).
No information is given regarding the fate of Szymon, Estera, or Mojsze. According to Lodz death records, Chana died on July 12, 1942 of pulmonary tuberculosis. Malka died of unknown causes on August 1, 1944.
