User Comment:

In the Lodz Ghetto name search, Mendel is showing as deceased as of 07/02/1942.  I cross referenced this with JewishGen Lodz hospital records, and there it shoes the same address, same year of birth, and same deceased date as the original site.  Mendel name is spelled Mandel on Jewish Gen site and place of birth as Lodz.  I therefore conclude that Mendel name may have been spelled Mandel Najman.

I agree that the Mendel/Mandel you've found is a reasonable match for the Mendel Najman who signed the album. While the birthdate listed, in 1921, would have made him 20 years old in 1941 and thus a bit too old for School #1, it is still possible that he could have been in this school at age 20 (or that the date was a typographic error from the original records or subsequent database entries). Also, we appreciate that you entered both spellings on different lines--that's how we like to see variations in spelling and dates that you find, so thank you!

Because I think it is possible that Mendel could have been in school #10 despite his age, I would ordinarily mark your data as "Possible." However, because you have transposed the day and the month in the birthdate (i.e., you entered the birthdate as 1921-23-10 rather than 1921-10-23), I have to mark your data as "Invalid." Please correct the error and reenter the data, and then I'll be able to mark this stage of your research as "Possible." Keep up the good work!

P.S. For your future research, it might be useful to know that our databases reference the same Yad Vashem databases that JewishGen uses, so you do not need to check JewishGen if you've already checked the USHMM databases (and I suspect the name "Mandel" you found on JewishGen could be a database entry typo). Looking forward to seeing your research on the next stages!

User Comment:

Mendel was listed at an unknown address when originally living in the ghetto.  The only known address shown for him was Sulzfelder Strausse 7, Flat 31 (per Lodz ghetto list).

Per the Lodz ghetto list and the JewishGen hospital records, Mendel was admitted to the Lodz hospital on 06/29/1942.  He ultimately died at age 21 of tuberculosis (per hospital records) in the Lodz ghetto hospital on 07/02/1942.

I believe his father was Chaim Zalman Najman (b 1883 or 1889 per 2 records) and his mother Ita Ruchla Najman (b 1885) per Lodz ghetto list.  They were both listed as living at the same address at Mendel and both individuals passed away  on 03/29/1942 and 03/24/1942, respectively.  The same living address along with the ages of the 2 individuals makes it likely that these were Mendels parents.  I also found a record of Jankiel Najman (b 1917), whom I believe to be Mendel's older brother.  He died shortly after Mendel according to Lodz ghetto hospital death records on 07/31/1942 of tuberculosis, which is a highly contagious disease probably contracted from his younger brother.  Chaim, Jankiel, and Mendel were all listed as being Schneiders (tailors).  All of the above information, same addresses, occupation, age probablity, and death of 4 individuals less than 4 months apart lead me to believe that this is the family tree of Mendel Najman.

Your research is quite thorough here, and I applaud you for your diligence in working to discover Najman family members at the same address as Mendel. As you suggest, it looks like Chaim and Ita were Mendel's parents, and they lived at Sulzfelderstrasse 7 Flat 31. In addition, it is worth nothing from the hospital record that Mendel's ghetto address is recorded as "Bd. Str. 7," his birthdate is listed simply as 1921, and his birthplace as "Lodsch."
