User Comment:

We came across Ruchla Ita Ostrowiecka who is born on January 10 1927, which would make her the correct age to begin Gymnasium and highschool. We believe that there is some hope in finding more information on her because there is no documentation of deportation. She lived at Insel 45, 1 and West 34 and the only note is regarding her change of registration to new address.

I agree that Ruchla Ita is the most likely candidate to have signed the album, based on her age and her listing as "Schueler" in the database. Someone else to keep an eye on, even though she's listed as "Arbeiterin" rather than "Schuelerin" or "Studentin," is Rajzla Ostrowiecka, born in 1924. It would be great if you could add her information here as well, so we can evaluate both of their stories throughout the project and see who is more likely to have signed the album.

Thanks for your concise but detailed description of how you made your decision!

User Comment:

We believe we have found two potential female relatives elder to Rajzla. The first Chana was born in 1895, and the second, Sura, was born in 1878. Chana is more likely to be the mother in our opinion due to the age, so Sura could be an aunt or grandmother. They all share the address Rauch 7,20. Sura is the only one who has a ghetto note, which states she was deported in may of 1942.

Re: that is why I had originally decided Ruchla and not Rajzla was our girl. I thought that the registration of Rajzla was a double and a mistake because the profile in which Rajzla is born earlier shares everything else and just fills in gaps. Should I remove her from the Identity page?

There were a lot of Ostrowieckas living at the Insel and West apartments, all of whom appear to have been moved to Cranach on the same date. Feel free to list them and their birthdates in the comments as well. I agree that Chana Rywa is likely to have been Ruchla Ita's mother (or female elder--thanks for your caution in stating the relationship, since we just don't know for sure yet!).

One other thought--you might want to look for "Ostrowiecki," as well, since transposition between the female (-cka) and male (-cki) forms of the last name seems to be common throughout the records. Not sure what you'll find, but it might be worth a look!

Re: Rajzla's family: I agree. One question, though: if you look at the Rajzla who is listed with a birthdate in 1915, she's listed at the same address as 1924 Rajzla, and left on the same transport as Sura. What do you make of this?

Re: Ruchla v. Rajzla: I see your reasoning and agree with you. Let's go ahead and stick with Ruchla.
