Gymnasium and high school for girls
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for girls was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

User Comment:
When Sura was in Lodz, she lived in Buchdrucker Gasse 73, then moved to Franz Strasse 67 Flat 3, Marysin 2 in 18/01/1942. There is a record in a second change of address from Brudzinski 27 to Franz Strasse 67 Flat 3, Edmund Strass 27 in 13/12/1943. Her occupation was worker.
Approver Comment:
Maria -- Excellent. Since there are no other S. Sonnabends of the correct age and gender listed in the Lodz Ghetto Database, I believe you have probably identified the girl who signed the album. Make sure you also enter the second spelling of her name -- Sura Rywka Sonabend (with an "S").

User Comment:
Sura Rywka Sonabend/Zonabend is listed twice as having changed address:
January 18, 1942
Buchdrucker Gasse 73 --> Franz Strasse 67 Flat 3 --> Marysin 2
December 13, 1943
Brudzinski 27 --> Franz Strasse 67 Flat 3 --> Edmund Strass 27.
Although it is unclear when she moved from where to where, if she was alive in the ghetto in December 1943, it means she had survived mass deportations to Chelmno and several years of privation in the ghetto.
