User Comment:

We found both Majer Lajb Ickowicz and Icek Mendel Ickowicz that were results of the fuzzy search, but we decided to go with Majer Lajb Ickowicz because his first name starts with an M, whereas Icek Mendel Ickowicz has his middle name start with the M. Majer has an occupation listed as "student" whereas Icek has his occupation listed under "tailor." Therefore, we decided to pursue Majer Lajb Ickowicz.

After doing another fuzzy search with first name "M*" and last name "Ickowicz," Chil Mendel Ickowicz (b. 1927) was one of the many results. While there were two entries under Chil Mendel Ickowicz (one in volumes 1-4, another in volume 5), we believe that they are actually the same person because the difference in birthdates are that it is listed as the 23rd in volumes 1-4 and 28th in volume 5. The addresses are listed as "Fisch 15 25" in volumes 1-4 and "Fisch 17 21" in volume 5. Although the addresses are different, there is a note on the entry in volumes 1-4 that this person had changed their ghetto address on October 12th, 1941 to Fisch 17. Therefore, we think that they are actually the same person. The information entered in this entry is from the entry in volumes 1-4. Chil Mendel Ickowicz is also a likely candidate because he was born in the time frame of #18B (1926-1932) and his occupation is also listed as SCHUELER.

Hosaja Mordka Ickowicz is also another candidate for "M. Ickowicz." He was born in 1932 and thus fitting the time frame of School #18B. His occupation is also listed under SCHUELER, meaning student. His address was listed as Zimmerstrasse 7 8.

Icek Mendel Ickowicz is another candidate. He was born in 1927, fitting the time frame of school #18B, and his occupation is listed under "SCHNEIDER," meaning "tailor." He lived on Schulzfelderstrasse 32/34 49. It may be likely that he was registered as a worker in 5/29/1942, or he was registered into the camp on that date. The records of the database indicate that he was "registered" on that date, not specifying what registry.

Lastly, Szaja Mordka Ickowicz is another candidate for this name. He was born in 1932, fitting the time frame of school #18B, and he lived in Zimmerstrasse 3 12. He does not have any other information from the database including occupation and information regarding deportation. He is still a possible candidate due to his birthdate.

Thank you for your incredibly thorough research and for listing ALL of the possible candidates for this name (and for your detailed process notes). I look forward to seeing what you find out about these boys in the next stages.

User Comment:

After we searched Ickowicz within an exact search, we came up with 333 matches. We began looking at every single one to see if we could find any matches. SURA FAJGA ICKOWICZ was #281 of the list of search results and had the same address as Majer. The database indicated she lived also in Lustige 11A 4 and had "Paris." She also had the same transport number and date as Majer Lajb Ickowicz. Her birthdate was 6/21/1893 so we believe she is his mother. We entered her occupation, GEHILFSCHNEID but nothing came up in terms of translation. In the same fuzzy search we believe we found his sister, Genette Ickowicz (b. 1936). Her address and transport number also matched that of Majer Lajb Ickowicz and Sura Fajga Ickowicz, and her occupation was listed as KIND, meaning "child."

Expert Reviewer Comment:
Looking at the previous reviewers comment, there seem to be multiple candidates that could be M., some that you have no listed. Please list those names so we can be clear as to all the possible candidates. Also, once you add those other children who could be this student, try and find any of their family members.

As for Sura and Genette, I do believe you are correct in stating that these are the family members for Majer Lajb. However, please state the method that gained you these results. I am assuming you matched the addresses and looked to the birth dates to figure out the relation, but it is important you add this in the researcher comments section to not only help us out but also other researchers looking into the same child.

Please add other children who could be "M." and also their family members- be sure to specify in the comments section which family members go with which student. Thank you and goodluck!
