User Comment:

I initially searched the name "Rachel Diament" under the Lodz ghetto database. I searched her full first and last name. However there were no matches. I then kept her full last name and now only added her initial of her first name with an asterisk. I found a match with a name, "Rachela Diament." From this I concluded that "Rachel" may be a probable nickname to "Rachela." Also the name "Rachela Diament was born on July 30, 1927. This means that Rachela was 13 years old when she signed her name. This age correlated with the age of a typical student in school #9A. I also made note of her ghetto addresses:

Franzstrasse, 18 18

In addition, based from the USHMM's comment on other possible candidates for the name "Rachel Diament," I also believe that there are more possibilities. There is another "Rachela Diament" whose date of birth is 15 Dec 1932 which would make her 18 years old making her a possible candidate for being a student in this school. In addition there is another name "Ruchla Diament" whose date of birth is 15 Feb 1932 also making her 18 years old. In addition, these two people have the same address, so they may be the same person with two different nicknames. However the ghetto addresses are not available for these two people.

I agree you have found one possible candidate who could have signed this name in the album. Rachel, Ruchla, and Rachela, among other variants, are all different ways of writing the same name, some of which are in different languages as well (Polish, Yiddish, German, etc.), so we want to make sure to look for all of these variations when we see a name in the album. (The R* search in the "first name" field of the database search is useful for this type of search.)

Thank you for listing the other possible candidate. Please follow both of these names through the next stages and submit information for both girls.

User Comment:

I discovered that Rachel was sent to Chelmno, Poland on March 15, 1942 on transport number 25. This was based from secondary sources. Also based on secondary sources the sizes of the transports contained more than 24,650 people. In addition, all of the victims in the transports were killed in gas vans. It is then most likely that Rachel was killed in a gas van.

Does this reference 1927 Rachela? Please make sure you look for both candidates.

In addition, please be careful about your sources: the March 15 date and the transport date come from the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants database, but the rest comes from the secondary sources. Please correct your sources and resubmit your research on this stage, and I'll be able to mark it possible. Thanks!
