School #8A
School #8 was a school for girls in Lodz. The students in #8a attended classes in the morning. Most students were between 7 and 13 years old, meaning that they were born between 1928 and 1934.
School #8a was located at Ulica Limanoskiego 25. The street name was changed to Alexanderhof when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Ulica Limanoskiego and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

I agree that this is the student who most likely signed the album. In 1941 she would have been 9 years old, the right age to attend school #8a. In the future, please remember to leave a note in the research notes field letting us know how you decided this is the person who signed the album.
The note "Alter M" is short for "Alter Mieter," German for "old tenant," which we believe means that Chawa lived at this address before and immediately after the creation of the ghetto.
Good luck in the next stages!

Ester would be the right age to be her mother. In addion she lived at the same addressin the ghetto as well as the previous address at Alter M

I agree! Remember that Alter M is not an address; "Alter M" is short for "Alter Mieter," German for "old tenant," which we believe means that Chawa and Ester lived at the address on Alexanderhofstrasse before and immediately after the creation of the ghetto.

User Comment:
These lists were compiled by the Swedish Holocaust Memorial Association and for the Stockholm Holocaust Monument as a documentation of Holocaust victims whose relatives now live in Sweden. Importantly, Chawa is listed as having been commemorated by Hedras av Hinda Sara Pogorzelec f. Rozen or Pogorzelec Hinda Sara f. Rozen. I cross-referenced Hinda Sara's ghetto addresses to see if she and Chawa were related, and I believe we now have evidence of Chawa's death at Auschwitz (albeit based solely on their testimony). While there is more than one Hinda Sara/Sura Rozen in the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants database, one of them DID live at Alexhof 13 25 and was likely her older sister.

While I would like to see more information to confirm Chawa's death at Auschwitz, I agree that her sister's memorialization of her does indeed give Auschwitz as her place of death. I look forward to seeing what else you find about Chawa and Hinda.
