User Comment:

Until someone finds other information to help narrow down our options, there are two possible options which I found for M. Kaczala.  Both are named Malka, but I don't think they necessarily the same person.  The birth dates are suffiently different, and even though they lived on the same street, their addresses do not appear to be the same.

Malka Rywka lived at ALEXHOF 35 153 and ALEXHOF 51. One of her entries gives her first address as ALEXHOF 351 153, but I think the final digit in 351 was an error in data entry.

Malka Rojza lived at ALEXHOF 36 33.

I agree both that either of these women could have signed the album and that they are not the same person. Interesting that their names are so similar--down to the middle names that begin with R--but I think you are correct that the discrepancies in their addresses, dates of birth, and ghetto notes are large enough that we should not consider these two to be the same person.

I also agree that the 351 address is a typo or transcription error from some point in the record-transfer process; we note that the first digit in the flat number is also a 1, and it is not difficult to imagine someone entering data accidentally typing the 1 one field too early.

I will mark this research as possible until we find information to indicate more clearly which of these girls signed the album.

User Comment:

Malka Rywka was deported on a numbered transport (19) on March 15, 1942. Since secondary sources indicate that there were transports from Lodz to Chelmno every day in March 1942 and entire transports were killed on arrival, it is a relatively safe conclusion that Malka Rywka was murdered at Chelmno in March 1942.

We do not yet have information about the fate of Malka Rojza.

Your reading of the secondary sources is accurate. I agree that it is almost certain that if Malka Rywka was deported from Lodz on March 15, 1942, her destination was Chelmno, and if her destination was Chelmno, she was killed there. While I agree with all of your conclusions, I have to continue to mark this research as "possible" until we know which of these girls signed the album.

User Comment:

Both Sharit Ha Pletah and the WJC identify a girl named Mania Kaczala from Lodz who was born in 1928 and survived Bergen Belsen. I believe it is possible that she is the same person as Malka Rojza (also born in 1928).

Approver Comment:
I agree it is possible that Mania Kaczala, born 1928 in Lodz, and Malka Rojza Kaczala, born 1928 in Lodz, are the same person. Furthermore, I am curious about a Milka Kaciala, from Lodz, who is listed as a survivor in the database "Poland: Register of Jewish Survivors." Without a date of birth in this particular record, we don't know any more clearly that this name also refers to the same person, but it does leave me curious.

If we believe that Mania/Malka Rojza Kaczala was deported to and liberated from Bergen-Belsen, is there any other information you can find in the Secondary Sources that might help us deduce how and when she was deported to Bergen-Belsen?
