I researched the name "Jehoszua Apelowicz" into the database and no matches were found. I then entered "J" for first name and entered "Apelowicz" and clicked the "sounds like" box. The name JESZAJA APELOWICZ caught my attention because it was the same last name and the first names sounded very similar. Also, it was a boy who was a student, and he was born in the right range of time to be considered a student in his elementary school. For these reasons, I believe the two names are the same boy.

Other information provided:

I agree! Thanks for explaining your process so clearly. Often, children used multiple names in multiple languages (Yiddish, Polish, a Germanic variant), all of which sound relatively similar--it was simply the cultural milieu of the time. Jeszaja is the Polish variant of Jehoszua, so your instincts are correct. I also believe the names refer to the same person, and that Jeszaja Apelowicz is the person who signed the album as Jehoszua Apelowicz.

Great work! See you in stage 2.

Mother's Name:

User Comment:

I believe that I found Jeszaja's mother, Malka Apelowicz. Both she and Jeszaja lived at Alexhof 25 and Blattbin 13 23. Also, she was born in 1901 which would make her 28 at the time of his birth. Other information I found about Malka was her occupation (Arbeiterin) and her birthdate (March 20, 1901). I believe that Jeszaja had three sisters, or close relatives, that also lived with him: Chaim Apelowicz, Estera Szyfra Apelowicz, and Hewsaja Apelowicz. They were all within his age and they were listed at the same address.

I agree with all of the above research, and confirm that Malka is our best guess based on the available documentation to have been Jeszaja's mother.
