WITNESSING DARFUR: RESOURCES AND VIDEO
Witnessing Darfur
In July 2004, the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum issued a Genocide Emergency for Sudan's western region of Darfur. Tens of thousands of civilians have been murdered there and thousands of women raped by Sudanese government soldiers and members of government-supported militia sometimes referred to as the Janjaweed. More than 2 million civilians have been driven from their homes. Thousands die each month from the effects of inadequate food, water, health care, and shelter in a harsh desert environment. All are afraid to return home because the countryside is not safe. The Committee on Conscience is offering "Witnessing Darfur," a DVD with two short films about Darfur, and additional resources to help explain what is happening in Darfur and to help spread the word.
Included on the DVD are:
Darfur Eyewitness Former United States Marine Brian Steidle describes what he saw while in Darfur with the African Union Monitoring Force. March 2005, 10 minutes.
Staring Genocide in the Face Jerry Fowler, Director of the Committee on Conscience, relates stories told by refugees in Darfur. May 2004, 7 minutes.
Available online at Physicians for Human Rights' website
Darfur: Lives Destroyed John Heffernan of Physicians for Human Rights visits refugees in Chad and details the destruction of the Sudanese village of Furawiya. February 2004, 6 minutes.
