Chaim celebrated his Bar Mitzvah while in the ghetto. Upon turning 13, his family had saved half a loaf of bread for him and that was his gift. He felt so guilty to eat it in front of his family but they insisted. For days he couldn't look anyone in the eye.
I think this shows how good of a person he was and that he wasn't selfish. We shove our faces with birthday cake without a worry in the world but he could barely eat half a loaf of bread on what should have been, one of the greatest days of his life.
