Karolina lived in the Lodz Ghetto and received her education there until the schools were closed in 1941. She then became involved in occupational workshops within the community (sewing workshops). Her father died in 1942 and Karolina, her mother Sonia, and her sister Theresa went into hiding.

Kajla and her remaining family were sent to Auschwitz where her mother was gassed on arrival. However, Kajla, her sister, and her aunt were considered able bodied and then sent to a labor camp.
