I went through and searched I. Margolis, categorized under high school gymnasium for girls. I searched Irena because her birth year (1928) indicated that she was at about the right age to be a student in a gymnasium, even though her occupation was not indicated. Also, in her additional information, we see that she was either deported or moved on September eleventh in 1942, meaning she was still alive at that time. I am not sure how helpful this is, but she seems to be the most valid match available.

First of all, thanks for being brave enough to take on a student with a first initial listed without a full name--research on these names can be frustrating, since it can be difficult to know whether you've found a match once you find a name that seems to fit.

Second, thank you for your clear and well-reasoned comments. It was very easy for me, and will be very easy for your classmates, to follow your logic in selecting Irena as "I. Margolis." Irena's birthdate does make her a leading candidate for the student who signed the album--in September 1941, she would have been 12 or 13, on the younger side for a Gymnasium student.

Just to be sure, I checked names that are spelled similarly to Margolis and found an "Izabella Margules," who is listed as a "Schuelerin" (student) and was born in 1926, also the right age to be in Gymnasium. I'm going to go ahead and add Izabella's information to Stage I as a possibility for "I. Margolis"--try to follow her through the other stages and see what else you can find.

I also appreciate the note about the proof that Irena was still alive in 1941, since she was moved in 1942. When we reach the stage about deportations, we'll discuss further why September 1942 was a very important (and sad) time in the history of the ghetto.

I'm going to mark your submission as "Possible," until we figure out whether Izabella or Irena is the more likely candidate. Please keep up the excellent research and thorough comments!

I researched the surname Margolis and went through looking for victims with addresses that matched Irena's. I found two names, Dora Margolis and Juljan Margolis. Dora was born in 1901, making her old enough to be the mother, and they had the same 2 addresses. Juljan was born in 1932 and not only has matching addresses to Irena's, but he was also transported/deported on the same exact date as Irena- September 11, 1942. Therefore, Juljan could possibly be Irena's brother or relative.

I agree that you have found Irena's relatives--the age difference between Dora and Irena is appropriate for Dora to be her mother, and Juljan is likely a male relative, either a brother or a cousin. The fact that Juljan and Irena were deported on the same day in September, 1942, means that both were probably deported as part of the Gehsperre Aktion, which targeted young children for deportation to Chelmno.

I appreciate your patience in going through all of the "Margolis" records to find the ones that matched Irena's address, and once again, thank you for your clear and logical comments. As I explained in Stage 1, I'm going to mark this information as "Possible" until we figure out whether Irena or Izabella is our "I. Margolis." I look forward to seeing what else you find!
