User Comments:

I think this student could possibly be Izrael Icek Stajnhark. According to the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants records, he was born on September 28, 1931. Within Lodz, Izreal had lived on Bierstrasse Street 16 Apartment 6 and Bierstrasse Street 31. He was eventually moved or deported on June 22, 1944 at the age of 13. According to the Pages of Testimony submitted to Yad Vashem (http://bnaibrith.org/prog_serv/names_poland.pdf) in which Izrael’s last name was written as “Stajnhart,”  Izrael could have not only been born within Lodz in 1931, but possibly could have died within Lodz in 1944.

Interesting research. Like the expert reviewer, I agree that you may have found a match for the boy who signed the album simply as "Sztajnhart." And, like you, I was fascinated to see other alternate spellings and information in the Yad Vashem Shoah Victims database. There, I found the spellings - Izrael Icchok Steinhart and Israel/Yisrael Icchak Shteinhart/Sztajnhart. If this boy is a match, then it is likely he was deported to Chelmno in June 1944 or died during the time of the deportations. I think Izrael makes the most compelling candidate; however, there are a few other boys listed in the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants database who, based on their names and birthdates, I do not think we can rule out as possible matches for the student who signed the album. These include Aron Stajnert (3Aug1932) and Benjamin Szajnart (1928). What do you think?
