While researching this student, we found several records that may be a match. The first one was a record for a Salem Frydman. This record only differs from the name on the student list by one letter. The record lists his occupation as "Schuler" and gives a birthdate of 12.07.1925. His initial ghetto address is given as Bismarck 37 and is listed as having moved to Sulzf 61 and later, on 26.10.1941, as having moved Am Bach 1.

The second record, for Salem Friedman, shares the same date of birth and ghetto address of Sulzf 61. Only the spelling of the last name is different.

The third record, with the name Salem Frydman, has an initial address of Am Bach with the secondary address of Sulzf 61. The record also shows that this individual moved to Korn on 16.11.42. One major difference in this record is that the birthdate is listed as 12.07.1928. We speculate that the "8" of 1928 may have been an illegible "5" or simply an input error by either the original record keeper or whomever input the data into the database. The record for the first Salem Frydman shows a change of address to Am Bach.  The fourth and final record shows a Samuel Friedman having moved from Am Bach to Korn.

The fourth record we found is for a Salem Friedman, who listed as a female. However, the birthdate is listed as 25.07.1925 (a match for two of the other 3 records) and shows the individual as having moved from Am Bach to Korn, which matches the sequence of address changes listed in past records.

Based upon these observations, we believe that all four records are for the same individual.

The dates given for the changes of residence were gathered from dates listed on individual records for Salem Friedman/Frydman. We believe that the 23.11.42 is the date of Salem's registration for work or deportation. We base this assertion on the fact that every other record gives a date followed by a new address, whereas this date stands alone. November 23, 1942 is the last date on any record of Salem Friedman/Frydman and comes one week after his final change of residence. It is also important to note that the listed occupation on his record changes from "Schueler," or student, to "Arbeiter," or laborer, as of 23.11.42.

In searching for Salem’s parents, we searched the databases using both last names we found for his record. In searching under the last name Friedman, 153 names were found. After investigating them, we found a possible match for his father. Leon Friedman was born on November 22, 1887, making him old enough to be Salem’s father. They also shared one of the ghetto addresses we found for three records of Salem Friedman, Sulzf 61 8.

Assuming that Leon is Salem's father, it is interesting to note that on the Lodz Ghetto Hospital Record for one Leon Frydman he is listed as having died on June 22, 1942 from Unterernährung, or malnutrition. However, on the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitant record for Leon Frydman he is listed as having been deported to Chelmno on June 25, 1942. With the knowledge of the processes of Chelmno, we believe it is safe to say that Leon did not survive beyond that point. Whether he died in the ghetto or at Chelmno, however, remains a mystery we continue to investigate.

Efforts to identify the mother of Salem Friedman/Frydman have yet to yield results.

What a fascinating stage! I'll address your discoveries in turn:

1. Excellent work reading and considering the documents to deduce when Salem might have entered the workforce. After the closure of the schools in October 1941, many former students became laborers; after September 1942, when many child workers were deported to Chelmno in the Gehsperre Aktion, there would have been more opportunities to work. It is curious, then, what Salem might have been doing in the interim, but I'll let you keep puzzling over that.

2. I have no idea which fate is the correct one for Leon Frydman; if he died of malnourishment on the 22nd, he wouldn't have been deported to Chelmno on the 25th. Again, an interesting question. Have you looked at the databases available in later stages?

Excellent work on this stage!
