This student was Chana Mirjam Milewska (my father's youngest sister). Chana was born on April 2, 1930, and was the youngest of three children. She had a sister, Rachela, and a brother, Abram Mojzesz Milewski. Abram was the sole survivor of the family, and his name became Abraham Miles. Before the war, Chana's family lived very happily in a one room apartment on Sw. Jakoba. Chana's mother, Szprinca Frymeta, was a housewife and her father, Lajzer, was a very fine shoemaker. He had his shop in the front of the apartment. Chana had a very large, extended family with many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and they were always visiting one another. When the Lodz Ghetto was established, Chana's family remained in their one room apartment but had to share it with another family. Chana's family survived the entire war in the Ghetto until it was liquidated in August, 1944. They were deported in a cattle car and traveled for days in the brutal heat without water or food, survived the trip to Auschwitz. Upon their arrival, Chana, her sister, and parents were gassed and then burned in the ovens. My father has never been able to talk about what Chana was like.
