When the Lodz Ghetto was liquidated during August 1944, Chana's family was deported to Auschwitz. They traveled in a cattle car for days in the sweltering heat, without water, but miraculously the entire family survived the journey. However, upon arrival in Auschwitz, Chana, her sister Rachela, and her parents were sent directly to the crematorium and were gassed. Only my father survived Auschwitz, Birkenau, the subsequent death march, and final Nazi assault of grenades in Gleiwicz before being liberated by the Russians.
