KEEPING DARFUR ON THE FRONT PAGE

At the beginning of the New Year and a new semester, we cannot let our attention dwindle from the genocide emergency that continues in Darfur. In the past few weeks, Darfur has slipped out of the news. Nevertheless, the situation for the people of Darfur continues to deteriorate so we must persist in drawing attention to the crisis. Keep writing articles and editorials to school and local papers, continue to hold vigils and other events to make your schools and communities aware that the genocide has not ended, and stay educated about the current situation.

Many of you may have read about the peace accord reached in South Sudan. While this may be promising for the ongoing war between the North and the South, it has not solved the problem in Darfur. It is important to reinforce that the situation in Darfur has not gotten better, and in fact, may worsen if the world assumes that the peace accord will end the genocide as well.

Hopefully you have had or will have the chance to see Hotel Rwanda. The film depicts the genocide that occurred in Rwanda just over ten years ago and the horrific indifference of the West. This film comes at just the right moment to stir attention and action for Darfur. During the film an American journalist points out that when Americans see footage of what is occurring they will say, "Oh, God, that’s terrible" and then go back to eating their dinner. The film poignantly reminds us that we must not turn our backs again and remain silent.

As we begin this New Year, let’s make a resolution to put Darfur back on the front page. We must heed the warnings of the past, remain aware, and work to prevent the continuation of the genocide in Darfur.
