Lintel above a Torah ark from a synagogue in Nentershausen, Germany, destroyed during Kristallnacht

During Kristallnacht, members of the Nazi Party and other Nazi formations burn synagogues, loot Jewish homes and businesses, and kill at least 91 Jews. The Gestapo, supported by local uniformed police, arrests approximately 30,000 Jewish men and imprisons them in the Dachau, Sachsenhausen, and Buchenwald camps. This photograph shows the damaged lintel above a Torah ark from a synagogue in Nentershausen. The partially damaged Hebrew verse on the lintel reads: "Know before whom you stand".
