Student Profile: Ch. Aberferszt

Although there is a Chaja Sura Oberferszt (the only match with a name starting "Ch"), she was born in 1909.  Using the "sounds like' option, I found a more likely candidate named Halina (could easily be pronounced with the gutteral "Ch" sound).  

 

In addition, she was a born in the right age range and was a Schuelerin.  Since there is a change of address date, I'll list the addresses in stage 2 along with the date.

I agree that you have found the most likely candidate to have signed the album as "Ch. Aberferszt" for school #4b. Your instinct to check again after you found the closest match--a "Ch. Oberferszt" was a good one, since Chaja Sura would have been 32 years old in 1941, when the album was signed, a bit too old to be attending grade school. Halina, on the other hand, would have been 13 years old, an appropriate age for school #4b.

Halina lived at AM BACH 9 and SULZF 82 21 and moved to Cranach 2 on November 11, 1941.  However, according to her labor card her address as of January 1, 1943 was Cranach 6 8. Her occupation was Lehrling (apprentice) which was common for youth/students. According to Google Translate, Hut-Abteilung is German for "Hat Department," and JewishGen was the source for the employer's address.

Given the fact that the names are spelled exactly the same, both are students, both lived on Cranach Strasse, and the birth dates are almost the same (I'm guessing this was a typo -- they are exactly the same minus one digit), I'd argue the Labor Card is for the same Halina Oberferszt listed in the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants database.

It is not unlikely that Halina might have moved to a different address on the same street over the course of her time in the ghetto--or perhaps one or the other "Cranach" records was a data entry error somewhere along the line.

I agree with your thoughts on the birthdate, and appreciate your entering both the February and December dates, since we do not know which is correct.
