Gender: boy
School:
Gymnasium and high school for boys
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for boys was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

There were only 2 possible names for J. Ajzenman and only one fit the birthdate for the Gymnasium and high school for boys.He was born on Oct. 20th, 1927 which fit in the range of 1921 to 1927. The other possible name was born in 1939. It also fit the name because they were both classified as males. Lastly, his ghetto address was Insel 5 3

Fantastic work! I agree entirely with your reasoning; as you say, in 1941, he would have been almost 14 years old, an appropriate age to be attending Gymnasium and thus sign the album as part of that school.
Great job--can't wait to see what you find in stage 2! (Be aware that you might possibly find the last name spelled with an E or Ei or Ai, too.)

User Comment:
I searched the database for Ajzenman and about 70 names came up. I narrowed the names down by looking at the Ghetto Address which was Insel 5 3 and that narrowed down to the people that lived in the same place because the child had to have lived with their mother and father if they weren't deported already. About 4 names came up for that certain address so i looked at the dates of those to find which ones could've been the parents. Only one girl and one guy came up to be the obvious parents and they are Mendel and Etla Ajzenman. Mendel was born in 1892 which made him 35 years older than Josef which is a reasonable age for a parent. Etla was born in 1895 which is also another reasonable parent for Josef. The other names that came up could've been possible siblings.

I applaud your industriousness in going through all 70 names! Your reasoning for picking Mendel and Etla is sound, and I agree with you. Good stuff, see you in stage 3!

This information is very difficult to figure out. A couple Josef's came up and i even found one that was born on the same date but the name was slightly differen.t All i could recover was a prisoner number, a record group and some other information that i couldn't piece together. I found that he went to Flossenburg and i couldn't find anything about his parents or the other people that lived in the same address as him in the previous work. I found a date of entry in Flossenburg in February 25th, 1945 so maybe this could help. If you can figure anything out that could help then that would be really great. Thanks

Fantastic work. Thanks for your additions to this record.

Interesting. I understand your confusion, but I think you've done a good job of parsing through the data. Many of your colleagues have found other instances of names being spelled with a Z in some cases and an S in others, so Josef Ajsenman is not an unreasonable spelling for the same name. Keep poking around the databases and see what else you find; you might also be able to write to our archives here @USHMM and see if they can pull the roll number listed on his Flossenburg record.
Excellent work!

I do not understand what you mean by searching our archives because i cannot find a link to your archives. Help Please??? if you mean just the databases i cannot find a place to input a prisoner or record number.
Approver Comment:
Nope; I just meant if we hypothetically were going to search our archives, that's where we'd look (on the museum end). No worries! You're all set.

RG D50.3z is something we'd need to find the record in our archives; I think you've gone about as far as you can go, but you've gone pretty far and I think you've learned a lot about Josef (and certainly more than we knew before). Thank you for all of your hard work on this project.
User Comment:
World Jewish Congress lists his wartime location as Flossenbuerg. Sh'arit ha-pl'atah records his wartime location as Neunburg and his last known location as Neumburg (which may simply be a typo). The WJC notation for Flossenbuerg corresponds with the data from Stage 4.
According to the Holocaust Museum's registry of survivors, he changed the spelling of his name at some point to Joseph J Eisenman.
Approver Comment:
I agree that it is very likely that these records refer to the Josef Ajzenman who was found in stage 1. The date of birth for the Ajzenman record on this stage is an exact match for the one listed in the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants database for this student. Neunberg is the correct spelling, but you are right to include Neumberg as the last residence since that is how the town is listed in the record.
I look forward to seeing what you found in the next stage.
