Abstract:
Web portal to browseable census-style registration forms for Jewish residents of Lodz, Poland, 1916-1921, arranged by surname of head of household with information concerning other household residents. PLEASE NOTE: Some surname sections are not yet available as of October 2016.
"In Congress Poland and Galicia, each community was required to maintain an ongoing census-like record of all legal residents of the community. The information was recorded in huge volumes called Ksiegi Ludnosci [Books of Residents]. Individual Registration Cards were first filled out, and the information was later copied into these books. Until around 1932, the Books of Residents contained only those whose legal residence was in that community. During World War I, from 1916–1918, Lódz was controlled by the Germans, and they began registering all residents of the city, not only those who had their legal residence there. This is a collection of these cards, which exist for the years 1916–21.
Notes:
Spelling of surnames in these cards may be different than other records for the family as these were often Germanized [e.g., Bursztajn to Burstein].
A child reaching 18 years of age was registered under her/his own card. (This is important to remember if you know the name of a younger person and not the parent. )
[...]
The Lodz Registration Cards may include previously unknown family members who were victims of the [Holocaust]."
