Abstract:
On March 16, 1942 Colonel Vasile Gelep, Secretary-General of the Interior Ministry, sends the Governor-General of Transnistria, Alexianu by way of the Civilian-Military Cabinet a Romanian Red Cross request to the gendarmerie legion in Balta, including two lists of Jews deported to Transnistria: those about whom the Red Cross in Switzerland has inquired, and those corresponding with people outside Romania. The Red Cross wishes to know which of these Jews are interned in Balta, in order to enable them to send their letters via the organization. Enclosed are the Red Cross request, dated December 22, 1941, and the lists of Jews, also noting their "last address." (Only the first page of the second list appears here.)
