[Applications to place children in the care of the Judenrat] (ID: 27189)
Description:
This grouping contains applications to place children into various care facilities run by the Judenrat in Łódź. These facilities included orphanages, nurseries, day camps, and the like, many of which were located in the Marysin section of the Ghetto. These facilities were not solely for orphans, but also for poor children. Most of the applications include correspondence written by a parent to Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt requesting that their child(ren) be taken into the care of the Judenrat and placed in one of their care facilities. These parents were destitute and often times the only surviving parent. In some cases, the letters were written by other family members or older siblings. In all cases, the families were unable to properly care for the children. The applications include a statement of the request, an explanation of the family’s circumstances, the name and age of the children, and the name and address of the family member making the request. Some application include supporting documentation such as photos, references, and forms. Many times, the applications contain notes written by someone in the office of Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt including notes about the applicant’s family, the decision regarding whether the child(ren) would be accepted and reasoning behind that decision.
