[Applications for compensation] (ID: 27168)

Description:
This grouping contains applications for compensation filed by Jews in the Łódź Ghetto. Most of the applications include correspondence written by the applicant to Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt requesting compensation for material losses. The requests were for compensation for various good and services, including but not limited to: goods given to the Sonderkommando; items missing from care packages; requisitioned items; borrowed furniture; confiscated goods, bonds, and gold; and items given to the authorities. There are also requests for increases in already awarded compensation. The applications include reasons for requesting compensation, what they want in terms of compensation (money, coupons, etc.), itemized invoices when appropriate, references, and supporting documentation. In some cases, the applications contain notes written by someone in the office of Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt including notes about the applicant’s family, the decision regarding whether compensation would be rewarded, and the reasoning behind the decision.
