[Applications for assistance] (ID: 27054)

Description:
This grouping contains applications for assistance filed by Jews in the Łódź Ghetto. Most of the applications include correspondence written by the applicant to Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt requesting food or monetary assistance. In many cases, the applications were written by family members of the person requesting assistance. The applications were for various form of assistance, including but not limited to: food allocations; milk cards for children; cigarettes for smokers; increased rations for those who are ill or unable to work; individual monetary allowances, increase in allowances, extension of allowances, restoration of suspended allowances, one time allowances for specific purposes, and family allowance; transfer of benefits for a deceased family member; pensions for invalids, widows, and the elderly; loans; and exemption from payments such as rent, taxes, and loan repayment. The applications include reasons for requesting assistance, references, and supporting documentation. Many times, the applications contain notes written by someone in the office of Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt including notes about the applicant’s family, the decision regarding whether assistance would be given, and the reasoning behind the decision.
